Bela Karolyi was famous for his little nicknames. Betty Okino was a "fat spider". Mary Lou Retton was a "fat dwarf". He carried Kerri Strug in his arms off the floor, he urged her to make the second vault that (we sort of overlook) didn't actually matter for the team's score because Kerri's ankle was worth less than her endorsements once she left her teens, and even while he helped her choose her long-term prospects over her physical well-being, she was his sweet little "ugly hamster."
Starfish isn't about any of those things. It's about 50 kids discovering in a short rehearsal period that they can succeed, they can fight fatigue and blisters and muscle pain and get up one more time to do it again and make something beautiful. It's about supporting and loving and encouraging. It's about them. |
